First Day of Excavation!

Today was amazing, we started the actual excavation. There are 6 of us students who are excavating who each have our own trench with a supervisor to check our work. Each of us also has a local Jordanian who is helping us, mainly with the soil removal. Today was mainly setting up our trenches and removing the top soil layer. We carefully using picks and trowels remove the soil in layers. We carefully document each layer and what we find. It is very hot in the sun as the sun is directly on us almost all day but we find shade when we can and I am drinking lots of water. The mosquitos are still very bad especially at night; one of my friends has so many bites it looks like she has chicken pox. I am having a lot of fun and the people I am working with are great. I am still feeling good and have not had any problems so far.

  1. I am so glad and thankful that you are feeling well. I know you said that you are drinking lots of water, is is easy to get access to water or are you only using your camel water thing? It sounds so cool to do the excavating! Why do only 6 of you assigned to a trench, isn't there more kids. Are they doing something else? How big is the trench? How is the communication with the Jordanians you are working with? Do you or anybody in your group have bug spray?
Does the area that you are staying in feel safe? You mentioned that you keep the windows open, are you on the first floor or a second floor?
Grandma came home from the hospital yesterday afternoon and is doing well, so don't worry too much about her. They don't really know what caused the heart attack, but she is doing good now.
Joshua had his recognition last night and it went pretty good. He was sitting in alphabetical order with everyone so he was getting very fidgety the longer it went on. There was a really nice boy sitting behind and one seat over from Josh that was trying to keep him busy. Towards the end, Josh was taking the kids glasses and wouldn't give them back. He did this several times. The kid was really cool about it. After the program ended, it was chaos and a sea of people trying to get to the field house. It took us a long time to find Josh. Grandmother went with us and we all went to Oberweiss for ice cream.
It feel strange and quiet with you and Kate gone. I miss you and glad you are loving this experience. I hope you are taking pictures! Love you so much!!
